ETHGlobal Bangkok was a special hackathon for us. Not only due to the number of hackers gathered in one place (1000+ attendees!), but also because it was the first hackathon ever sponsored by the vlayer team. Most teams take it easy for the first time and join these events as regular attendees, but not us - we went all in.
To celebrate our alpha release, vlayer became an official partner and sent a full team to Bangkok: Marek (CTO), Ivan and Piotr (Email Proofs Team), Gosia (Ops Team), and Artur (DevRel). Our mission? Make sure hackers had all the support they needed to build something incredible with vlayer. Meanwhile, the rest of the team - our Web Proofs and Storage Proofs squads - were working from Warsaw, offering round-the-clock remote support.
It was great to see our booth alongside giants such as Polygon, Circle, Arbitrum, Uniswap, Coinbase, Chainlink, 1inch, World, and other talented teams. However, meeting up with the builders in real life and seeing their excitement about what vlayer offers to Solidity developers was even greater.
Speaking of Solidity devs, we sponsored a $10,000 prize pool for the following categories:
Our goal was simple: discover what creative, unexpected projects hackers could build with vlayer’s Solidity superpowers, while also testing how our tools mesh with other projects from the Ethereum ecosystem. After all, Web3 is all about interoperability and permissionless innovation, right? Spoiler alert: the hackers understood the assignment and didn’t disappoint.
Most Inspiring use of vlayer: straVault
Thomas, a solo hacker, created straVault, a platform that allows users to place social bets on challenges within Strava, an app for tracking physical exercise. Here’s how it works:
To claim the funds, users generate a Web Proof with vlayer—no need for Strava’s developer APIs or expensive oracles. Just create the proof and verify it on any EVM-compatible chain.
Best Use of Web Proofs: ActionFlow
ActionFlow built a low-code Web3 automation tool with a simple drag-and-drop UI.
Hackers can combine provable triggers and actions backed by zk proofs, enabling creative workflows for Web3 apps.
Honorable Mention: vObywatel
While this project didn’t win, vObywatel showcased an impressive use case for Web Proofs. They demonstrated how to issue smart contract wallets backed by government-issued credentials, such as those from Poland’s mObywatel platform.
Best Use of Email Proofs: ZuCitizens Registry
ZuCitizens Registry allows users to create anonymous identities based on email messages from trusted sources.
By using vlayer Email Proofs, the app verified that specific emails came from trusted entities. This has exciting potential for DAOs and account abstraction wallets that could use emails as second factor recovery mechanisms.
Best Use of Time Travel OR Teleport: ZK Credit Score
This app bridges traditional finance and Web3 by generating privacy-preserving credit scores.
Using zero-knowledge proofs, ZK Credit Score analyzes wallet activity across chains to verify token balances without compromising user privacy - a game-changer for DeFi protocols.
Choosing winners from 26 entries was tough - but we gathered invaluable feedback that we will work on and come back strong early next year!
We learned a lot in just two days, including areas where we can improve. That’s the nature of being in alpha. As someone wise once said: “If you are not ashamed of your first version of a product, you’ve released it too late!”
ETHGlobal just announced next year’s hackathons, and we’re already planning our return. If you’re building in Web3, don’t miss the chance to create something amazing with vlayer. Save the dates and we’ll see you there!
